Sergio Parisse injured for six months
The Six Nations is never much fun for Italy. They wander around Europe routinely taking a pasting, like some well-meaning but ultimately doomed military campaign, with the one beacon of hope being a home victory over whichever team is weakest at that time (England next year obviously). However, their chances of even achieving that next year have taken a massive blow today as it is announced that Sergio Parisse has cruciate ligament-knack and will be out of the tournament.
Parisse, remember, is widely viewed as the best number eight in the world. Unlike many sports, rugby is a game in which it is incredibly difficult to look brilliant in a crap team due to the back-foot, no territory situations you are constantly found in as a player. That Sergio has achived this status year after year playing for Italy is nothing short of miraculous, like finding a listenable song on a Coldplay album.
I'm sure you all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery, as the world game is a lesser place with him on the sidelines. Still, there's always Nick Easter to look forward to, eh? Oh.
