Crap start to the new year department: Dafydd Jones retires

The New Year has got off to a sad start with news today that Wales and Scarlets back row, Dafydd Jones, has been forced to retire at only 31 due to shoulder injury.

Jones was always an underrated player.  He had his share of achievements with great Heineken Cup tie wins (like the spectacular victory over Toulouse, above), two Celtic Leagues and playing in one of the great World Cup games for his country.

He certainly deserved more caps before his injury, given Ryan Jones's awful form and Andy Powell being, well, Andy Powell.

Bummer. A superb hard nosed back row. Wales and the scarlets will miss him …. Thought I hear that Powell is distinguishing himself in the up-the-jumper league?

brighty – allegedly yes. Now that either says that Wasps coaching team are better than Wales(I doubt it as they overlap) or The EPL is not “The Best League on the World” (TM). OR ( I prefer this one) Powell’s legendary bacon butty hunt in a golf cart has magically turned him into a great player.

TomSki – great news for England fans, bad news for the rest of us. We did so enjoy the pantomime that was RFU Elite Circus dept (or whatever it’s called) – “Look out SCW is behind you”; “Oh no he’s not…” etc
